These preliminary steps are fairly obvious and every religion has them: baths and other purifications done by the clergy; prayers and meditations before the rite begins; special blessings of the altar and its tools; special dressing and/or prayers by the congregation before arrival; last minute instructions to the participants, ete. Some of these steps may be done during phase one as part of creating sacred space and time, but most are done beforehand for practical magical and mundane reasons. [See Chapter 11.]
