Civil Rights and Religious Liberty

Civil rights, civil liberties and religious freedom have long been priorities of Unitarians and Universalists. Our dedication to just and equitable relationships and the inherent worth and dignity of every person leads the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) to advocate for equality before the law; through our public statements, congregational activism and legislative advocacy, the UUA opposes discrimination based on ability, gender, race, sexual orientation, and other identities. We affirm access to and participation in the democratic process as an essential civil right of U.S. citizens Our commitment to the right of conscience and commitment to the democratic process also leads the UUA to long-term support for civil liberties, the right to privacy and freedom from government harassment. Unitarians and Universalists have long sought religious freedom—today, the UUA continues that search in advocacy for the separation of religion and state, and for freedom from religious persecution and discrimination.
