Rev. Peter Morales has been elected the eighth president of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Morales, 62, won with 59 percent of the vote, defeating Rev. Dr. Laurel Hallman of Dallas, TX. Morales, who has been serving as senior minister of Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, CO, will be installed on Sunday, June 28th, at 6:30 p.m. He succeeds popular outgoing president Rev. William G. Sinkford, who is completing his second, and final, four-year term. The installation service will take place on the final day of the UUA’s annual General Assembly, held this year in Salt Lake City, UT.
Morales campaigned on a promise to make Unitarian Universalism “the religion for our time.” After learning of his victory, Morales explained his mission: “I want to grow our faith and reach all those people looking for a non-dogmatic, liberal religious community. I look forward to working with partners in many progressive and justice-seeking religious groups. There are tremendous issues that we'll be facing in the coming years and we're going to need one another.
Morales reiterated his commitment to reach out to a wider spectrum of seekers. He said, “The breadth of our message is very appealing, but we need to become more culturally diverse in our forms of expression in order to reach the millions of people who share our theology and values.”
Morales will become the first Latino president of the UUA. He was born in 1946 in San Antonio, TX, into a family with Mexican-American and Spanish heritage, and he is bilingual. Before hearing a call to ministry, Morales had successful careers in academia and publishing.
Peter and Phyllis Morales have been married for forty-two years. They have two adult children, Miguel and Marcela. The Moraleses will maintain their home in Colorado in addition to an apartment in Boston, where the UUA is headquartered.
