Unitarian Universalism has a proud history of supporting full equality for lesbian, gay bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Many of our congregations have completed a Welcoming Congregation program to increase understanding and inclusiveness, and extend their work beyond the congregational walls.
Unitarian Universalist (UU) legislative ministries, social justice groups, congregations, and individuals work across the United States to protect the civil and legal rights of LGBT individuals and families at state and local levels, while the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) does similar work at the national level.
Sponsored by the UUA, Standing on the Side of Love seeks to harness love’s power to stop oppression. This faith-based public advocacy campaign works to counter exclusion, oppression, or violence based on identity--including sexual orientation, gender identity, immigration status, race, and religion.
Unitarian Universalism has become widely known for affirming and working toward recognition and rights for gay and lesbian relationships. Find out more about UU marriage equality efforts.
Unitarian Universalism has a healing, life-saving message! And we believe in putting our faith into action. As individuals we can learn how to be a strong ally to LGBT people. As congregations we can partner with local LGBT groups and organizations and ask what they need and how to support them. Find out who the UUA partners with nationally.
Many UU congregations celebrate and recognize important days in the LGBT calendar, planning services and joining community events in support of Gay Pride, Transgender Day of Remembrance, and National Coming Out Day, among other opportunities.
We invite you to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and our commitment to LGBT equality.
You can also find out how some of our congregations put their faith into action for LGBT rights.
