...want to schedule a Social Justice Empowerment Workshop with the Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA's) Office for Congregational Advocacy and Witness.
We have discussed this possibility with the members of the governing board of the congregation, the leaders of the congregation's social justice programs, and the minister or ministers. We agree to:
- Fill out the enclosed Congregational Social Justice Assessment Form.
- Publicize the event starting at least 90 days before the date.
- Recruit participants and ensure that at least 20% of our average Sunday worship service attendees register for the workshop.
- Ensure that the minister(s) is willing to attend and participate.
- Ensure that at least one half of the members of the Board will attend.
- Ask the director of religious education to attend.
- Ask members of the social action committee to attend.
- Be sure to invite youth, young adults, and elders.
- Pay attention to bringing a diversity of participants.
- Provide childcare.
- Do an evaluation after the training event is over.
- Participate in a “Next Steps” follow-up teleconference.
Congregations are expected to pay a fee based on the size of the congregation:
- Up to 150 members: $600 (Fair Share); $700 (Contributing
- Up to 550 members: $950 (Fair Share); $1,050 (Contributing)
- Over 550 members: $1,300 (Fair Share); $1,400 (Contributing)
This fee does not cover the costs of the handbooks, meals, snacks, newsprint, or childcare. The handbook (PDF, 147 pages) is available online and can be easily downloaded and or sent to a local printer for printing and binding.
Cluster workshops are now available and held for teams from congregations (2 or more people) and cost $200 per team (up to 4 people). For teams of 5 or more the rate is $200 for the first four and add $25 per person for each additional person. Handbooks are provided by the UUA. Congregations that sponsor cluster workshops can waive the fee in exchange for providing coffee, lunch, and supplies.
The UUA subsidizes the workshops which can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $3,500 depending on the number of days for the training and the travel distances for the program facilitators. The Office for Congregational Advocacy & Witness will pay for the travel, room and board, and honorarium for the workshop facilitators.
