Social Justice Events for Youth

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries coordinates the Youth Social Justice Training, or YSJT. YSJT will not be held during the 2007-2008 year in order to re-vision the role of social justice in youth ministry.

Formerly known as the YRUU Social Justice Conference, the YSJT brings together about 90 UU youth from all over the continent to learn how to organize grassroots campaigns, how to work with the media, and to educate one another about social justice issues we can be involved in right now. This conference is where you can learn to put your UU faith into action. YSJT 2007 was held in New Orleans, LA, and featured a service project. The training is geared towards training District/Regional Youth Social Action Coordinators and other youth (especially youth who identify at People of Color or as BGLQQT) to learn how to organize for social justice within their communities.  YSJT will not be held in the 2007-2008 year. However, youth interested in social justice organizing can check out the YSJT 2005 Resource Packet (PDF, 238 pages).

For youth who want to do more social justice work, we recommend the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) JustWorks camps.  JustWorks camps are short-term projects that help volunteers examine and understand the causes and damaging effects of injustice. Participants work directly with people in the communities they serve, experiencing social justice struggles firsthand.

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries also works with the Washington Office for Advocacy to plan the Sexuality Education Advocacy Training (SEAT).  SEAT 2008 was held from March 15-18, 2008, in Washington, DC.
