Local Service Project
Each year, the General Assembly Planning Committee works with the Local Volunteer Committee to select and support a local service project. In this way, General Assembly and the thousands of Unitarian Universalists it brings to our host city can have a positive impact on the local community. In 2007, General Assembly raised over $30,000 for Village Gardens, a sustainable urban agriculture program in Portland, OR.Hispanic Unity has been selected as the 2008 service project.
HUF's mission statement is: "Empower Hispanics and other members of our community to become self-sufficient and lead productive lives"; their "goal is to help our clients achieve citizenship and a life with dignity. One way we do accomplish this is by increasing their understanding of our country's democratic principles and socio-economic systems."
Their specific proposal "focuses on Phase 3 (final phase) of the One-Stop Education and Training Center which entails completely renovating two large conference rooms. The total cost of this phase is $86,300. UUA's financial partnership will enable us to increase privacy for our FREE tax preparation services, expand financial literacy, citizenship classes and voter registration efforts and introduce a new employment resource center and immigration legal services. As a result, Hispanic Unity of Florida will assist wage-earners in retrieving $1.2 million in tax refunds and credits and provide services to more than 1,800 individuals per year with once (sic) the Education & Training Center is completed."
This year's service project will have representatives in the General Assembly Exhibit Hall. Learn more about Hispanic Unity.
