The Work
What has been done...- consultations, workshops, sermons, and keynote speeches in every district in the last four years;
- training on leading the revised Welcoming Congregation Program;
- a children's literature bibliography sent to all congregations;
- a pre-marital counseling guide for the needs of same gender couples for clergy and other religious professionals;
- a new resource packet on the religious right;
- over 1,000 personalized customer service requests a year;
- numerous phone calls, emails, and faxes;
- presentations and writings to clergy regarding same-gender marriage, queer youth, and conversion;
- providing information about other pro-queer groups;
- consulting with Interweave and the Lambda Ministers Guild;
- programs on family, internalized oppression, interfaith, protesting, and history for General Assembly; and
- increased analysis and movement toward an anti-racist approach to our work.
What is being done now...
- increased analysis of the linkage of oppressions;
- birthing a Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender (BGLT) families' conference at deBenneville Pines, CA;
- collaborating with many people in their self-education of transgender concerns; and
- continuing all that has been done. We live in an era of legal discrimination. People may lose their jobs, lose their kids and may not marry because of their sexual orientation or gender identification. Violence is commonplace and often downplayed, ignored and sometimes encouraged. At some point this era will end, but not the oppression. This reality guides the efforts of Office of BGLT Concerns as we work, educate, and organize to end oppression toward all peoples.
What will be done...
- creation of Welcoming Congregation II;
- revision of the BGLT worship resources packet;
- leadership development;
- continued work to make schools safe for BGLT youth; and
- continuing all that has been done.
