Explain Acronyms Carefully

Acronyms must be used with care. Remember, the user may not be familiar with the acronym used.

How to use acronyms in web pages: The first instance of an acronym needs to be written in full with the acronym following it in parentheses. Subsequent appearances of the acronym on the same page do not need to be explained.

  • Don't write: "The UUA promotes the inherent worth and dignity of every person. The UUA also..."
  • Do write: "The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) promotes the inherent worth and dignity of every person.  The UUA also ..."
